DJI Phantom 2 – The Best GoPro Quadcopter?

Today we will be taking a look at one of the most popular drones available, The DJI Phantom 2. There is very little doubt that one of the most enjoyable aspects of owning and flying a quadcopter is also being able to record footage of your flights with the use of a quality camera. Even those who approach the hobby with a love of flying the machine as their primary interest will also almost always enjoy being able to watch their flight from the perspective of the drone itself and thus carrying a camera on board becomes something of an essential component in selecting which drone is the best suited to your needs. Although there are some drones on the marketplace which are simply too small to accommodate the extra bulk that carrying a decent camera will provide, many can cope with the weight demands a camera places on a drone, and so picking which drone is the best for this particular endeavor can be a challenge.

Or at least, it used to be.

Now, before we get into specifics with the drone, it is perhaps best to first consider the camera which you will be looking to place upon it. Although there are numerous action-oriented cameras out there, by far the most popular is the GoPro. This is true to such an extent that the GoPro is now virtually synonymous with the recording of almost any extreme sporting pursuit, with the vast majority of people calling any camera used to record footage in extreme conditions a GoPro.

This is not entirely without good reason too. The GoPro is a wonderfully designed piece of kit and it’s popularity is definitely more than down to a very clever marketing campaign. The GoPro is definitely one of those rare pieces of tech which has managed to build it’s positive reputation on the back of actually being very good at what it is supposed to do as opposed to simply being the device which is deemed the most trendy.

Anyway, back to the quadcopters. There are, of course, many drones which are very well suited to carrying a GoPro camera on board, but for our money, the best of the bunch is the DJI Phantom 2. Specifically the model of the DJI Phantom 2 with the Zenmuse H3-3D Gimbal.

This particular model will not only allow you to comfortably accommodate the camera but will also ensure that your overall flying experience is not hindered in any way. If you are experienced at flying drones without a camera, you really will struggle to notice any significant difference to the handling of the DJI Phantom 2 with the GoPro attached. Furthermore, the auto-pilot system is good enough that you can easily control the camera and quadcopter at the same time, after a little bit of practice.

The only real potential drawback to consider is the price. You almost always have to pay for quality, and unfortunately the DJI Phantom 2 is no exception to this rule.

If you are looking for a slightly cheaper option then the Walkera X350 or the Blade 350, may be more to your liking, but be aware that in each case, good though those quadcopters are, you are paying for second best.
